Instructions on How To Cook Steak in an Air Fryer

Air frying a steak is a total game changer! It’s quick, juicy, and so easy, you might ditch the grill for good! Serve it with this strawberry salad with glazed walnuts and some Texas Roadhouse rolls, and dinner is served!

Steak

  • Prep: Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, prepare the steaks by rubbing them with olive oil on each side.
  • Cook: Rub Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper on each side of the steaks. Add the steaks to the air fryer basket and then cook for 12 minutes, turning over after 6 minutes. When done to your preference, let the steaks rest for 10 minutes.

Steak Cooking Times and Temps

  • Medium-Rare: Cook for 10 minutes, flipping at 5 minutes. (135°F)
  • Medium: Cook for 12 minutes, flipping at 6 minutes (145°F)
  • Well-Done: Cook for 12–15 minutes, flipping halfway. (160°F)

For perfect doneness, use a meat thermometer and remove the steak about 5°F before it hits your target temp (it’ll continue cooking as it rests).

Top Tips for Perfect Air Fryer Steak

  • Room Temperature: Have your steaks at room temperature before cooking for the best results. This helps the steak cook evenly.
  • Use Dry Steak: Pat your steak dry with a paper towel before cooking to ensure even browning.
  • Spacing: Avoid overcrowding the air fryer so the air can circulate evenly around the steaks.

Garlic Herb Butter

  1. Combine: In a small bowl, add unsalted butter, garlic, fresh rosemary, thyme, and parsley.
  2. Mix: Mix until smooth, and serve the steaks smothered in the garlic butter!

How to Store Leftover Steak

Got leftover steak? If the answer is yes, save it for tacos, fajitas, salads, sandwiches, and more! Here’s how to store and reheat it properly.

  • In the Refrigerator: Store your steak in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • To Reheat: Preheat your oven to 250°F and heat the steak until it reaches an internal temperature of 110°F for the best results.
  • Serve Cold: Slice the steak thinly and let it come to room temperature for a few minutes. Then, add it to a salad or make a tasty steak sandwich.

Darn tasty. I used a T bone steak and followed your directions. Couldn’t be more pleased. While letting the steak rest I also sprinkled a little brown sugar on it. I paired my steak with some homemade macaroni and cheese. Now its time for a nap.

  2. Can’t wait to try this. I see the air fryer is the deep basket type. I have the InstaPot with Airfryer attachment, so I think that will work the same, but it’s round & I’m not sure if my steak(s) will fit. Guess I’ll have to try & find out ?

I also have a Pampered Chef Air Fryer. It is not basket type. It has a rotisserie attachment for chicken and rotating basket for fries. And wire trays for cooking food on which is where the steak would rest and the air circulates all around it. Do you think cooking the steak in this type of AF would yield the same results?

I decided to try this recipe and it came out very moist and tender. It was the perfect temp for me and the steak was seared and seasoned perfectly. I will definitely use this recipe in the future.

Because we live in an apt, a grill is not available,
But our Gourmia air fryer is our finest kitchen addition. Now that you offered the most delicious recipe for steak with garlic butter,
we are able to feast on air fried steak that is as
juicy and flavorful as if it were fresh off the Kimoto grill. Cheers !

  5. We tried this tonight. The steaks turned out ok, with a good taste. But it did not get any sear on the outside as the picture shows.

  6. I’m new to cooking with an air fryer. I have a 3.7 qt. GoWise Air Fryer with a view window. This steak recipe looks delicious. I haven’t made it yet. If I want to cook just one steak to medium rare, do I need to adjust the 10 minute cook time? If so, what would you suggest?

    1. My air fryer is a 6 quart. You will want to reduce the time for the steak since yours is smaller. 10 minutes should be plenty. Enjoy your steak!

    1. Yes, if your air fryer has enough room to cook 2 at a time without overlapping that will be great!

  7. Can I use your Best Steak Marinade in the World that you also posted by using Airfryer to cook the steak and not the skillet or is this recipe better? Thanks.

      1. Will the World’s Best Steak Marinade good with New York Strip/Steak or Rib Eye if I’m cooking it in my Air Fryer? Thanks.

      2. Thank you so much! We had the best New York Strip Steak using your World’s Best Steak Marinade. I marinated the steaks overnight in the refrigerator. Took it out of the fridge 1 hr. before cooking. Preheated my Airfryer for 4 minutes and cook the steaks at 400F for 5 minutes each side. Perfect for us! So delicious!!!

Those look amazing. I’m always afraid of cooking my steaks any other way than my tired and true method but this would be such a versatile way to use my air fryer!

  9. Thanks for this article,Its a very informative article.many people ask about the air fryer options and after reading this many of them got their answer.
very useful and comprehensive guide for young talent who are looking a career in this field

Followed to a T minus eyeing the seasoning vs measuring. Mind blown!! Juicy steak! Soo flavorful.. thanks for the recipe, very impressed.

I thought it was very tender and tasty, could cut it with a fork. But I didn’t get the nice char on the outside . I did marinate it in a packet of spices with oil and vinegar. Delicious, but as much as I love my air fryer (which I use twice a week at least) I think I will broil or grill my steak.

I made this again today for the second time and it was wonderful! We love the seasonings used and it is a super quick and delicious steak!! Thank you (:

  13. I have a small round air firer with a basket, not the oven type. How can I cook steak in it without it becoming dry and tough?
