Instructions on How To Cook Steak in an Air Fryer

Air frying a steak is a total game changer! It’s quick, juicy, and so easy, you might ditch the grill for good! Serve it with this strawberry salad with glazed walnuts and some Texas Roadhouse rolls, and dinner is served!

Steak

  • Prep: Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, prepare the steaks by rubbing them with olive oil on each side.
  • Cook: Rub Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper on each side of the steaks. Add the steaks to the air fryer basket and then cook for 12 minutes, turning over after 6 minutes. When done to your preference, let the steaks rest for 10 minutes.

Steak Cooking Times and Temps

  • Medium-Rare: Cook for 10 minutes, flipping at 5 minutes. (135°F)
  • Medium: Cook for 12 minutes, flipping at 6 minutes (145°F)
  • Well-Done: Cook for 12–15 minutes, flipping halfway. (160°F)

For perfect doneness, use a meat thermometer and remove the steak about 5°F before it hits your target temp (it’ll continue cooking as it rests).

Top Tips for Perfect Air Fryer Steak

  • Room Temperature: Have your steaks at room temperature before cooking for the best results. This helps the steak cook evenly.
  • Use Dry Steak: Pat your steak dry with a paper towel before cooking to ensure even browning.
  • Spacing: Avoid overcrowding the air fryer so the air can circulate evenly around the steaks.

Garlic Herb Butter

  1. Combine: In a small bowl, add unsalted butter, garlic, fresh rosemary, thyme, and parsley.
  2. Mix: Mix until smooth, and serve the steaks smothered in the garlic butter!

How to Store Leftover Steak

Got leftover steak? If the answer is yes, save it for tacos, fajitas, salads, sandwiches, and more! Here’s how to store and reheat it properly.

  • In the Refrigerator: Store your steak in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • To Reheat: Preheat your oven to 250°F and heat the steak until it reaches an internal temperature of 110°F for the best results.
  • Serve Cold: Slice the steak thinly and let it come to room temperature for a few minutes. Then, add it to a salad or make a tasty steak sandwich.

  1. This recipe is exactly what I was looking for, but my ribeyes are really thick, close to 3 inches. If I want them medium rare, how long should I put them in for? 14 mins and flip at 7 mins?

    1. Yes, that would be best. You can even use a meat thermometer to reach your internal temperature you desire.

  2. Wow! This just made cooking steak so much easier, I never thought of this before. I am a steak fan but most of the time I didn’t want to cook it because of the attention that it requires like having it in my cast iron and basting it, which makes it difficult with my kiddos running around. This just makes it way better, thank you for sharing this!

  3. 5 stars
I had my doubts. We are steak snobs and buy rib eyes at Whole Foods and have it down to a science In the cast iron. This was fantastic though. The flavor was incredible, the mess was not existent and it was cooked perfectly. We did 5 minutes each side for medium rare.

  4. Soooooooo dog on good! Thank you for sharing this recipe. I was reluctant to try this method of cooking on my beloved steak at first, seeing that I am a grill steak lover at heart. But out of desperation on a cold Monday evening in April I tried it and I am so glad I did. Delicious! Tender and flavorful. The best non-grilled steak hands down!

  5. Can you use a top sirloin steak for this recipe? I was going to cook one in the oven but I want to try it in the air fryer.

  6. We got lucky when our daughter got a new toaster/oven/air fryer for a wedding gift so she gave us the air fryer she already had. It’s a Gourmia and I’m pretty obsessed ? with it. I’ve made a bunch of air fryer recipes on this site and every single one is great. My favorite so far is the air fryer salmon. Best salmon ever!!! Thanks for sharing your recipes Alyssa!!!!?

  7. We made a strip loin steak on the air crisp function of our Ninja foodi. It was perfect. Did 5 minutes first side and 4 minutes on second side for medium.

    1. 5 stars
I agree! This is a tasty recipe! I followed the recipe with the exception of times for the KC strip steaks. I cooked them (on top of the fingerling potatoes) for 5 minutes on one side then flipped them for 4 minutes on the second side. A perfect medium steak! The seasoned butter added so much flavor to the finished steak. I have a Gourmania airfryer.

  8. The steak is really good. I will be doing it again. My grandson has made this to and they love it.

  9. My hubby gave me an Air Fryer for Christmas. I love it!!!! I’ve cooked steaks, pork chops, chicken, and whole little potatoes. They have all turned out wonderful!!!!!!

  10. 5 stars
OMGosh! SO easy, tender, quick and delicious! Absolutely perfect! I was shocked that it was so good. My husband, who will only eat GRILLED steaks marveled at this recipe. Thank you, Alyssa, for your scrumptious variety of foods!

    1. I use an air fryer from Sur La Table but last time I checked it is sold out. I am hoping that they restock soon. There are some other great air fryers out there though!

  11. 5 stars
Just finished making this & it is super delicious! Will be making again for sure! Easiest and tastiest steak ever.

  12. What type/kind of air fryer are you using for this recipe. It looks amazing and I would like to try this but am in need of this kind of air fryer?

    1. Any type of air fryer is a great purchase. There are so many recipes you can make with them. I have a couple that I have tried. I like the NuWave Brio 6 quart or the Instant Vortex.

      1. 5 stars
This recipe is THE BEST. I almost bought a grill until I cooked my steak this way. Since I have a different air fryer, I made sure to check the doneness of my steak.

      2. My name is Teri too! I have been wanting an Air Fryer and got one for Christmas. I have a Cosori and really love it. It’s just the right size, and has non stick baskets~a must have……2 rib eyes waiting their turn for tomorrow night. I like rare, so I may need a small adjustment. Wish me luck!?

      3. Alyssa, using the air fry steak recipe, how long do you do the steaks for steak bites ? Is it the same temp and time cooking
